Four networks account for most public rapid charging at UK motorway services. GRIDSERVE operates the largest high-power installations, with chargers up to 350kW using CCS connectors at Moto service areas under its Electric Hub branding, and standalone Electric Forecourts near major routes. bp pulse covers Roadchef and Welcome Break sites with chargers typically up to 150kW; older bp pulse units at some sites include CHAdeMO alongside CCS. Osprey serves independent locations near motorway corridors, usually at 150kW on CCS. CCS versus CHAdeMO: which connector does your EV use?

CCS2 (Combined Charging System, Type 2 variant) is the European standard for DC rapid charging and the connector fitted to almost all EVs sold in continental Europe since 2017 and in the UK since 2019. It adds two DC pins below the standard Type 2 AC socket. CHAdeMO is a Japanese standard used predominantly in earlier Nissan Leaf models, some Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVs and legacy Kia Soul EVs. Most EVs launched from 2021 onwards are CCS-only, and CHAdeMO infrastructure is declining. Tips for reliable motorway charging

Charge to 80%, not 100%, to avoid the taper above that level and keep stops short. Aim to arrive at the charger with 20% or more remaining to give yourself a buffer if the unit is occupied or offline.
