What is the Megawatt Charging System?

The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is a charging standard developed by CharIN (the Charging Interface Initiative) for high-capacity electric vehicles including heavy goods vehicles, coaches, electric buses and large commercial vans. MCS is designed to deliver between 750kW and 3.75MW of charging power, compared with the 350kW maximum currently supported by the CCS (Combined Charging System) standard used for passenger cars. At 1MW, an electric HGV with a 600kWh battery could theoretically charge from 20% to 80% in under 30 minutes, making it viable for the mandatory rest breaks drivers already take under Regulation (EC) 561/2006. The MCS connector is a distinct physical plug, larger and more robust than the CCS connector, and is not backward-compatible with passenger car charging infrastructure.

MCS versus CCS: how they differ

CCS and MCS solve different problems and serve different vehicle categories. CCS (Combined Charging System, Type 2) was designed for passenger cars and light vans, with a practical ceiling of 350kW on current hardware. It is the standard at all major UK motorway EV chargers today, from the 50kW Pod Point units to the 350kW GRIDSERVE Electric Hub chargers. MCS is engineered for heavy commercial vehicles that carry substantially larger battery packs: a long-range electric HGV may carry 500-700kWh, compared with 60-100kWh in a typical passenger EV. At 350kW, charging such a battery to 80% takes well over an hour; at 1MW, the same charge takes under 30 minutes. The two standards are not interoperable: an MCS charger cannot charge a passenger EV, and a CCS charger cannot deliver MCS-level power to a truck.
