Every stop on the A1

The A1 and A1(M) run roughly 410 miles from London up to Edinburgh, but the proper motorway-grade services are thinner on the ground than you'd expect, so it pays to know them by junction. Heading north, your reliable on-route stops are Blyth at J34 (Moto, with a Travelodge, M&S Food and GRIDSERVE chargers up to 350 kW), Wetherby at J46 (Moto's busiest single-operator site, with Burger King, KFC, Pret and a Days Inn), Leeming Bar at J51 (a smaller Moto rest area with just a Costa and a McDonald's drive-thru), Scotch Corner at J53 where the A66 peels off west, and Barton Park at J56. Further north you've got Durham at J61 (Roadchef, with a McDonald's drive-thru and a Shell forecourt) and Washington between J64 and J65 (Moto, split across two sites linked by a footbridge). Ferrybridge sits where the A1(M) meets the M62 at J33. Jornee lists each one in the order you'll actually reach it, so you can pick your break by driving time rather than guessing at the next blue sign.

Overnight lorry parking on the A1

Overnight HGV parking on the A1 is workable but worth booking ahead, because the good sites fill most nights. On the southern half, Markham Moor Truckstop (off the A1 at the Markham Moor interchange, near Retford, DN22) is the classic 24-hour stop with around 120 spaces, showers and overnight security, and it's on the SNAP network. Moving north, Blyth at J34 takes lorries (first two hours free, then £30, or £33 with a £10 food voucher, SNAP code 13466) and Wetherby at J46 has a long-standing 67-space lorry park with a much larger eHGV area planned. Washington (between J64 and J65) was one of the few Moto sites the old Highways Agency listed as an approved truckstop, and Durham at J61 takes overnight HGVs via SNAP too. Note Scotch Corner at J53 has no HGV parking at all, so use the lay-by across the junction or Barton Park at J56 instead. Jornee flags which stops actually have lorry bays and showers, so you're not driving in to find a car-only car park.

EV charging on the A1(M)

EV charging on the A1(M) is decent at the hubs but the gaps are real, so plan around them. The strongest stops are Blyth at J34 and Wetherby at J46, both GRIDSERVE Electric Highway sites with HPC units rated up to 350 kW CCS, alongside Washington (between J64 and J65) which pairs 350 kW GRIDSERVE chargers with 250 kW Tesla Superchargers. Scotch Corner at J53 also runs GRIDSERVE up to 350 kW. The thinner spots are Leeming Bar at J51 (only six GRIDSERVE bays, added in 2023) and Durham at J61, where the GRIDSERVE units top out around 140 kW though Shell Recharge there reaches 300 kW. The longest dry stretch worth watching is the 27 miles between Wetherby and Leeming Bar, plus the run north of Washington, where the A1(M) ends and on-motorway rapid charging effectively runs out. Jornee shows live charging speeds per bay so you can filter to 150 kW or 350 kW and skip the slow ones.

For motorcyclists on the A1

For motorcyclists, the A1 rewards short, frequent stops rather than one long slog, and a few sites suit a bike better than others. Blyth at J34 is a good first leg from the south, with covered seating, a Greggs and a forecourt where you can fuel and grab a coffee without much faff. Wetherby at J46 is busy but has the widest food choice on the route, so it's the natural lunch break, while Scotch Corner at J53 is handy if you're turning off onto the A66 towards the Lakes. Further north, Durham at J61 has picnic tables and a Costa for a quick stretch, and Washington (between J64 and J65) makes a sensible last stop before the A1 carries on towards the border. None of these charge bikes to park within the free two-hour window, and Leeming Bar at J51 is the quietest if you just want a calm cuppa. Jornee lets you filter to fuel and toilets only, so you can chain quick stops without detouring into a packed car park.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I park a lorry overnight on the A1?
The main overnight options are Markham Moor Truckstop near Retford (around 120 spaces, 24 hours, showers, on SNAP), Blyth at J34 (first two hours free, then £30, or £33 with a £10 food voucher, SNAP code 13466), Wetherby at J46 with its 67-space lorry park, Washington between J64 and J65 (a former Highways Agency approved truckstop), and Durham at J61 via SNAP. Scotch Corner at J53 has no HGV parking, so use Barton Park at J56 instead.
What are all the A1 and A1(M) services?
Heading north the signed services are South Mimms (M25 J23 / A1(M) J1), Baldock (J10), Sawtry (J15, northbound only), Peterborough (J17), Blyth (J34), Ferrybridge (M62 J33), Wetherby (J46), Leeming Bar (J51), Scotch Corner (J53), Barton Park (J56), Durham (J61) and Washington (between J64 and J65). Markham Moor near Retford is an A1 junction stop with forecourts, a KFC and a McDonald's rather than a full motorway service area.
Is there EV charging on the A1(M), and where are the gaps?
Yes. The strongest rapid hubs are Blyth (J34), Wetherby (J46), Scotch Corner (J53) and Washington (J64–J65), all with GRIDSERVE chargers up to 350 kW, and Blyth and Washington also have 250 kW Tesla Superchargers. The weaker spots are Leeming Bar (J51), with only six bays, and Durham (J61), where GRIDSERVE tops out near 140 kW though Shell Recharge reaches 300 kW. Watch the 27-mile gap between Wetherby and Leeming Bar, and the stretch north of Washington where on-motorway rapid charging runs out.
Which A1 stops are best on a motorbike?
Blyth at J34 makes a good first leg from the south with covered seating and an easy forecourt, Wetherby at J46 has the widest food choice for a lunch break, and Scotch Corner at J53 is handy if you're branching onto the A66. Durham at J61 has picnic tables and a Costa, and Leeming Bar at J51 is the quietest for a calm cuppa. Parking is free within the two-hour window at all of them.
Where should I break the journey from London to Edinburgh?
For a single break, Wetherby at J46 is roughly the practical midpoint of the A1(M) and has the most food and fuel choice. For two breaks, Blyth at J34 works well in the first half and Durham at J61 or Washington (J64–J65) in the second. EV drivers should anchor stops at the 350 kW GRIDSERVE hubs at Blyth, Wetherby and Washington, since charging thins out north of there towards the Scottish border.
